Roommate Chronicles Part 1: The Dudes’ Abode

This is my first year living away from home.  It is my third year in college, but I live 30miles from campus.  It is a lot cheaper for me to commute but not necessarily easier.  So as with every new episode in one’s life comes new experiences and problems.  This is going to be just a way to see what is happening in my apartment as I deal with the transition from home living to sharing an abode with 3 other people.

I share a two bedroom apartment with 3 people.  Two are high school friends, and one is a friend we all made here at college.  It is a pretty good thing we have going.  There is no drama, no real problems of the personal nature.  It has already been one quarter and a few things arose that I did not expect.

Being male, messes are not something that really nag at me too much.  I am not perfect in any way, my room at home is almost always a mess, and that goes for where I sleep in my apartment as well.  One thing I found that I could not stand is a dirty kitchen.  I am a fairly savvy cook, and enjoy doing it.  However, my place of employment as conditioned me to have a spotless, sparkling, clean kitchen in which to prepare meals.  This does not seem to be a priority for the others who live with me.  I cannot express in words the disgust I feel towards our kitchen, and the anger of being the only one who seems to care.

When the problem was first discovered we pinpointed on roommate to be the biggest contributor to the mess.  And it is true he does not seem to know how to clean up after himself.  Try as we might it seems we cannot change him.  At least we stopped him from leaving chicken in the fridge for 3 months.  Though I am not sure if he has cleaned his shower towel since we moved in, in August.

With every member of our apartment in a relationship with a significant other, I thought we would strive to impress them (seeing as that is how males act in the presence of females) and keep things clean.  After 3 months it has been proven that this is not the case.  Hopefully with time, and maybe a little passive-aggressive warfare things will change.  Here’s to more nights cleaning until 2am, such is life in the Dudes’ Abode
